Wikis are simple online databases. I have found them to be very useful, it allows people to create webpages on various topics and edit them. It is particulaly good for educational purposes since it allows a group of people to work collaboratively on a single pages. People can edit each others pages, and make notes of changes they have made on the discussion board. If one does not like changes made to his/her page, you can go to thepage history and undo any edits!

The only downside to wikis is the fact that they are plain & boring. They do not encourage people to use them due to the fact that they are not vissually appealing! It is also a somewhat lengthy process to embed videos or other widgets.

In my opinion, wikis would be used by much more people if they were more attractive, instead of simple & boring. Like the ning or the blogger, each person could create their own profile, with their own picture and personal information. Themes would also be a good idea, so as to add colour and uniqueness to each person's profile. Like facebook, there could also be a visible wall where people can have open discussions! People would still be able to collaborate on a project or a page by creating a wiki page. These pages should have designs or colours.

Because wikis are plain and boring, i do not think that people will really use them to share information in the future. They will most probably be replaced by social networks such as the ning. Or perhaps some interactive blogspots where people can work together on the same thing, those blogspots would preferably not have any advertisments, for proffessional puposes.

Photo shop final project evaluation

For our final project on photo shop, we were to create an advertisement for anything we wanted. The aim of the project was to display various skills with tools that we have learned to use on photo shop. I have chosen to create an advertisement for my own fashion store!
My advertisement was made up of 10 layers, including the background, which were all appropriately named. I also tried my best to use a great variety of tools such as the patch & heal tools, gradients and various filters. Below is a description of tools that I used for each layer.

1. Models (1):
- Filter: Artistic: Film grain, I thought it would give it a nice effect & that it would look nice if I used a Filter.
- Change in brightness/contrast. I used this tool to give the image a more shaded look.
- Burn & dodge tools which I used to create shadows in the picture.
2. Blonde Model:
- Magnetic Lasso to take the model out of a bigger picture, I specifically used these tools because the model was in an irregular shape.
- Change in shadows & highlights to give it an effect by creating shading. The use of this tool also contributed to adding more depth to the picture.
3. Model in Yellow dress:
- Magnetic& polygonal lasso to cut her out. I did not simply use the cropping tool because these tools are particularly efficient since they cut out the exact shape, which was asymmetrical.
- Rotate tool. This created more space, & made the poster look more professional.
- Brightness/ contrast tool. This was once again used to create shading & shadows, giving the picture a nice effect.
- Healing brush. There were some imperfections in the picture. I found this tool particularly great when it came to repairing scratches and specs on the image. It basically copies the info from the first area to the second, in the form of the Brush tool. But it also averages the information, so it blends.
4. Winter fashion models:
- Artistic filter: I used a filter called ‘dark strokes’ to darken the picture and give it a shadowy look. I thought that look matched the winter theme that was modeled.
- Slight rotation (see above)
- Skew tool. This is because there was a distortion; the focal plane was not parallel to the surface and not leveled with the center, so this was fixed using the skew tool. I then took this to another level where I exaggerated using the tool to create a nice look with the object.
- Sponge tool was used to change the level of saturation of colors for an area of an image.
5. Text: 'Fashionista' & 'Open Sunday…'
- I changed the fonts and changed their colors so that they matched with the rest of the cover and also looked coordinated.

6. Disco ball:
- Polygonal lasso was used here to select a geometric looking area of the image to work on, using the patch tool while leaving the rest of it untouched.
- Rotate (see above)
- Patch tool was used to repair an area with pixels from another area or a pattern. This was useful to me because the patch tool matches the texture, lighting, and shading of the sampled pixels to the source.
7. Nail Polish:
- Change in Opacity. Opacity refers to the amount of transparency a layer has. I changed the opacity jus so that the nail polish was not 100% opaque. This was done just to give it a special effect.
8. Lip Gloss:
- Dodge tool. I used this tool to lighten dark areas, choose Shadows, Midtones & Highlights and applied an exposure value to the image.
- Opacity Change(see above)
- Glowing. After changing the opacity, I wanted to further edit the image so that the edges did not show as much & the image was glowed because I though it gave it a special effect that way!

In this picture, i played around a little bit with the brightness & contrast of the image. I think this gave it a nice effect. I also used teh dodge & burn tools. I used teh dodging to brighten some areas and give the picture a lighter shade. I then used the burning to give other areas a darker shade. I think these 2 tools gave me a great oppurtunity to experiment with shading!

In this picture, i decided to focus on the brightness & the contrast. I tried many diffferent scales before i got to this one. I think it brought out the waves in the sea, and made various features stand out. I think this tool plays an important role in altering the colour intesity in the image.

In this image, i aplied an artistic filter. Since there are palm trees and water in the image, somewhat representing nature, i thought that it would look nice if i made it look like a painting. So i used brish strokes so that it looks as if it were drawn & painted by hand. I really liked this effect.

I used the patch tool to duplicate some hearts in this picture. I also used it to create a double of the guy in the picture. I then decided to use the burn & dodge tools to create shades in his image. I also used the marque tool to cut out some of the background so that i could use thehealing tool and fix it up!

This is the logo that i decided to create using photo shop. I chose to design a logo for a roller coaster company. A logo is meant to be a graphic representation or a symbol of a company name, trademark, abbreviation...etc. It is meant to be uniquily designed and representative of what it is made for.
I think my logo represents and communicates the theme of my company. I chose to add text and write the name of the company. i also represented a loopy coaster graphically. After researching, i found out that logos are usually simple and use vibrant colors. So i incorporated both of these aspects into my design.

I think this is a very good example of graphic art. Firstly because it is visually appealing and attractive. It is intriguing which tends to grasp peoples attention. The use of color is also outstanding. Although the design is not exactly simple, and there are many colours being used, which can ussually decrease the quality of the piece, I think this picture is successful because it is appealing to the age group it was targeted at, (ages 13-18.) The artist chose something that can appeal to the age group and portrayed it beautifully using vibrant colors. This also makes it a great adverstising tool, it could be used to publicize a concert or an event for teenagers.

I chose the logo of Coca Cola as an example of graphic art simply because it is a well known brand and the logo has proven to be successful. Personally, I think that its simplicity contributed a great deal to its success. It has effective visual communication because it is representative using both creative pictures and text. It has a good use of color since the color scheme is coordinated and easy on the eye. It is well organized, concise and east to understand. It also eye catching and interesting. All these characteristics contribute to making it an effective advertising tool, adding to its success as an example of graphic art.

This is a good example of graphic art because of its creativity. The artist has chosen a very simple object and modified it. It is well organized and easy to understand. In addition to being intriguing, this grasps the attention of people. The effects that were used are very eye catching and creative. The use of color is also quite impressive. All contributing to the quality of the art work.
